Two years ago, I would have written an entirely different post from this one. Back then, we were living in Florida with every possible convenience and every variety of store that you could imagine. I was quite spoiled in our day to day existence. Since then, we’ve moved to the mountains of North Carolina where we have to haul our own trash to the dump and losing power means losing water, too. Living in a small town that is situated in a very rural area is a completely different style of living. It’s like we moved the clock back about 50 or 100 years.
You know what? I love it and since we’ve been up here, we’ve cut out broadcast cable, I’ve downgraded my iPhone to a regular cell phone and we’ve circled the wagons around family, friends and nature. With that said, if I had to pick something that makes my life easier, it would have to be my washing machine. That is such a boring answer and it makes me feel old, but when you have 2 kids under the age of 5 (and one in cloth diapers), my washing machine is probably the one thing that I could not do without. I would happily pee outside and live by candlelight so long as I could keep my beloved washer. And you know what? It isn’t even a fancy, front-loader. It’s a 10-year-old, old school Whirlpool and I will keep it until the day it dies (we’ve already changed the motor once). That’s another thing that has changed about us since we’ve moved here. We don’t need to constantly upgrade to the next new thing “just because.” Life in general is so much simpler and it’s amazing how much easier you can breath when the things most important to you all fit in your car. Of course, we’d have to strap the washer to the top of the Subaru, but I think we can make it work.
What a sad, little post this was. Now, please excuse me while I go pretend that I live a more exciting life.

I agree 100% about the washer! I have an old top loader too and it’s great. I also have an old dishwasher that the front just fell off of but I refuse to let DH replace it (just yet) because it does such a GREAT job on the dishes! lol

We moved from the city {first from Orlando, then from Boston} to the country {Cape Cod} and life is SO MUCH more fun, and more RELAXED without all of the “things” we needed before. We still have satellite TV {surprisingly more affordable than cable because we’d have to pay the cable company to bring the wires to us!}, but I no longer buy things because other people have!
Our washer is an old-school top loader too. While I’d love a front loader, I don’t need one. My only wish is that we could be a one vehicle family, but that is simply not realistic given where we live.
My husband would love to move to the mountains and completely abandon this rat race city life we live. I would love for things to be simpler than they are right now. I am glad that you have found this peace in your life

Your life sounds lovely!! I would LOVE to see your washing machine strapped to the roof of your car, you crack me up. I LOVE the smell of my clean washing, so I guess that makes me a saddo too. xx

Funny that you say that! When I was looking for my home up here in Alaska the deal breaker (or maker) was the house had to have a fast Internet connection. In an area where 60 percent of the homes have no electricity or running water I had to have all of these ‘creature comforts’.

I completely agree. We moved from the hustle and bustle of Denver Colorado where starbucks gleem on every corner – to Willow Alaska a town of 2000 that barely has a post office. Some of our neighbors don’t have indoor plumbing! I’m thankful for plumbing!
I think your life sounds wonderful. There are times when I wish our house wasn’t so full of “stuff” & that I could just cut the 2 year cable contract. And I agree with the washing machine…I’m off to do a load or two myself!
I would definitely not call this post sad. There is something to be said for living the simple life! More complicated isn’t necessarily better!
